The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has announced major changes to the way that they’ll conduct the Operation Airbrake Program this year.
For years now, the CVSA has held a full week-long Brake Safety Week inspection campaign in the fall. This year, however, they will be shaking up the routine by eliminating the weeklong brake inspection blitz and replacing it with a single day enforcement campaign that will be held on Thursday, September 7.
In addition to the one day brake inspection campaign, the CVSA will hold an unannounced brake inspection event that could happen “at any time throughout the year.”
During both the one day event and the surprise inspection event, the CVSA will be performing primarily Level IV inspections on large commercial vehicles throughout North America.
Last year, Brake Safety Week was held September 11 – 17. The CVSA officers conducted 18,385 inspections. 13.2% of inspected trucks were placed out of service for brake related issues. Inspectors also found non-brake related violations that resulted in out of service orders for 14.8% of the vehicles inspected, but some trucks had violations in both brake related and non brake related categories.
According to the CVSA, “Brake-related violations comprise the largest percentage of all out-of-service violations cited during roadside inspections. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce the braking capacity and stopping distance of trucks and buses, which poses a serious risk to driver and public safety.”
The CVSA will also be conducting the annual Roadcheck commercial vehicle inspection campaign from June 6 -8 this year. This year’s emphasis will be on cargo securement.
The CVSA has inspected more than 3.4 million brakes during Operation Airbrake since 1998. The event also includes educational programs and outreach to raise awareness about brake safety. You can find out more about the inspection events by clicking here.
