Over 50 vehicles including several semis were involved in a fatal pileup crash that has closed down a stretch of icy I-83 in York County, Pennsylvania.

The crashes began around 1 p.m. between Exit 8 and Exit 10. The crashes reportedly started in the northbound lanes with a tractor trailer and another vehicle, but as the crashes began to pile up, officials were forced to close down the southbound lanes.
On scene reports indicate that 40 cars and 11 tractor trailers were involved in the pileup.

Nine people have been transported to the hospital and the coroner has been called to the scene.

The crash has caused miles-long traffic backups. The northbound lanes of I-83 have reopened but it isn’t clear when the southbound lanes will reopen.
