FedEx truck driver dies after sedan passes on the right, sending truck flying off overpass

Published:

A truck driver died Tuesday afternoon after a collision with a sedan on an Otay Mesa West highway.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on westbound State Route 905 at Picador Boulevard, just north of Beyer Boulevard, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

The driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, a 30-year-old mother from San Diego, attempted to pass the FedEx tractor-trailer while traveling in the right lane.

As the sedan driver was passing the truck, both vehicles lost control.

The vehicles were traveling at unknown speeds.

The truck driver, a 55-year-old Chula Vista resident, swerved left and smashed through a metal bridge railing and landed on Picador Boulevard, which runs directly underneath SR-905.

The truck driver was killed instantly.

The identity of the truck driver has not been released at this time.

The driver of the sedan, a male passenger, and her 4 children – including an infant – hit the truck as it collided with the bridge railing. The sedan came to stop in the left lane.

The entire family suffered zero injuries.

It isn’t clear why the sedan driver attempted to pass the truck on the right or whether she will face charges for the driving maneuver.

No alcohol or drugs were suspected to be a factor in the collision.

The crash is still under investigation.
