New Bill Would Delay ELD Mandate For 2 Years

Published:

A bill introduced today would push back the December 18, 2017, ELD Mandate compliance date by two years.

Bill Would Give Trucker Two More Years Before Compliance Date

The bill introduced by U.S. Rep. Brian Babin is called the ELD Extension Act of 2017. This would give drivers until December 2019 to comply with the ELD Mandate.

Babin, who is a member of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Highways and Transit Subcommittee, noted, ‘While technology like ELD’s have great promise, I didn’t come to Washington to force those ideas on small businesses – and neither did President Trump. If trucking companies want to continue implementing and using ELD’s, they should go right ahead.  But for those who don’t want the burden, expense and uncertainty of putting one of these devices into every truck they own by the end of the year, we can and should offer relief.

OOIDA Encourages Drivers to Contact Lawmakers to Support Bill

OOIDA applauded Babin for introducing the bill, pointing out that the FMCSA has not cleared up many uncertainties that accompany the ELD Mandate: “The agency has failed to answer important questions from Congress and industry stakeholders about this mandate. This includes issues related to enforcement, connectivity, data transfers, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and many other legitimate real world concerns.”

If you’d like to support the bill, you can check out OOIDA’s “Knock Out Bad Regs” page to learn how.
