A North Carolina truck stop has announced that they will install 24 truck electrification stations that will allow drivers to plug in instead of idling.
The electrification stations will be installed at Big Boy’s Truck Stop in Kenly off of I-95 at exit 105 before the summer begins.
Drivers will have the option to pay to plug their trucks in to keep power running in their trucks without idling. In addition to the 24 truck electrification stations, Big Boy’s Truck Stop will also be adding four plug in stations that will supply power for refrigerated trucks so that they don’t need to run their diesel compressors.
It isn’t yet clear how much truckers will have to pay to plug in.
The truck stop electrification project will be done in conjunction with IdleAir. IdleAir will also be responsible for maintaining the electrification stations after the project is completed.
The electrification project is expected to provide significant pollution reduction and fuel savings. Project developers predict that the electrification stations will save 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. The project is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 500 tons.
Funding for the $300,000 project comes from Duke Energy. The electrification project is part of a 2015 settlement made by Duke Energy with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
