The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says that a big truck is to blame for the collapse of a little bridge across the Upper Iowa River today, remarking in a Facebook post that “this is why the bridge collapsed.”
From the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office: “On Friday, May 5, 2017, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the county engineer’s office of a bridge collapse across the Upper Iowa River on Cattle Creek Road. Until the engineer’s office is able to clear bridge debris from the river, canoes will be unable to navigate through the Upper Iowa River at this location. This bridge is located between Coldwater Creek and Chimney Rock.”
In the photos you can see that the weight limit for the bridge is 3 tons. It isn’t clear how much the truck weighed, but our guess is more than 3 tons.
