Five State Crackdown On Speeding Starts Today

Published:

Law enforcement officers in five southern states will be working together to curb speeding this week.

Weeklong Speeding Enforcement Kicks Off Today

From July 17-23, “Operation Southern Shield” will be taking place in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

In addition to cracking down on speeding drivers, police in these five states will also be on the lookout for aggressive driving behaviors, distracted driving, impaired driving, and drivers not wearing their seat belts. Police will be patrolling both interstates and back roads.

According to Harris Blackwood, director of Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “Drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by 10 miles an hour or more increase their chances of being in a crash because the faster speeds reduce their reaction times and ability to stop suddenly.

Funding for Operation Southern Shield comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
