The crash happened on the inbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway near 59th Street just before 11:30 p.m.

According to the Illinois State Patrol, a Chevy sedan collided with a truck hauling Coffee-mate brand coffee creamer.

The crash caused heavy damage to the side of the trailer and led to a major spillage of the coffee creamer onto the roadway.

All four people in the sedan — a mother and her three children — were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. The severity of their injuries is unknown.

The crash and coffee creamer spill shut down some lanes of the Dan Ryan for hours as crews worked to clean up the mess. An Illinois Department of Transportation snow plow was brought in to help clean up the spilled creamer bottles. All lanes were reopened by 4:30 a.m.

The cause of crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
