A Kansas City-based startup has created new technology that they say will allow truckers to stay comfortable overnight while reducing idling and saving on fuel costs.
According to the company’s website, Idle Smart “is an automated engine start stop solution that maintains fleet uptime by keeping batteries charged and engines warm, as well as reducing overnight idle time and providing year-round cabin comfort for drivers.” The fleet manager or truck driver selects a target temperature and then Idle Smart system will turn the truck’s engine on for long enough to heat or cool the cab to the desired temperature. When that temperature is reached, the system shuts the truck engine off.
Idle Smart also has a battery protection component that allows the user to monitor the voltage of a truck’s battery and to run the engine for a specified amount of time if the voltage gets too low.
Idle Smart says that the new technology could save as much as 70% on overnight idling costs.
