Stolen car crashes into semi while running from police

Published:

In Chicago on Tuesday, a carjacker escaped being caught by the police after hitting a tractor-trailer and being chased by four police dogs in Lake County.

The police dogs were tracking the thief near Lakemore around 10 p.m., near West Sullivan Road and Four Seasons Boulevard.

The stolen vehicle, a 2013 Nissan Altima, was reported stolen from a home in Volo on September 5, 2017.

Christopher Covelli told The Chicago Tribune, that when a police officer, recognized the vehicle he attempted to pull the vehicle over but the thief drove off.

Covelli added that the suspect’s driving “was reckless as he went through a neighborhood.” and because of the safety risk involved, the chase was called off.

He would have pursued the vehicle; however, the safety risk was too high.

Less than 1 minute later, the same officer discovered a traffic crash involving the same Nissan Altima and 2014 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer truck.

The Nissan was traveling eastbound when it disobeyed a red light and crashed into the tractor-trailer.

The truck driver, 50, from Troy, Missouri, was not injured.

The car thief fled the scene of the accident. Two K-9 teams began to follow him; however,  about a half mile from the crash the scent ended.

According to the Northwest Herald, police looked for 3 hours but made no discoveries.

No description of the thief is available.

Police urge anyone with information regarding this crash to call the sheriff’s office 847-549-5200 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.
