I-80 Through Donner Pass Closed For Whiteout Conditions

Published:

Winter weather has forced transportation officials to shut down both directions of I-80 from Colfax to the Nevada State Line this morning.

Caltrans calls the whiteout weather conditions severe and says that few exceptions will be made for truckers to make the attempt to cross Donner Pass: “The only exceptions we’re making are for mail trucks, fuel trucks and one animal in the livestock. pigs. They don’t have fur.

The California Highway Patrol blames traction issues and poor visibility for the I-80 shut down, which was put in place around 5 a.m. today.

Thirty-two inches of snow have fallen in the area since yesterday. Caltrans reports that 56 inches of snow have fallen in the past 48 hours.

Caltrans isn’t sure when I-80 will reopen.

This closure comes after I-80 was shut down Saturday night for winter weather and remained closed for the next 16 hours.
