Body of Missing Trucker Found In River In Iowa

Published:

The body of a truck driver who went missing after crashing into the Wapsipinicon River near Independence, Iowa, has been found.

Investigators Find Truck In River But No Driver

On Friday just before noon, kayakers on the Wapsipinicon River discovered a partially submerged truck owned by Taylor Made Express but found no sign of the truck driver. The truck was pulled out of the river later in the day as volunteer divers searched for signs of the missing trucker. Due to concerns about flooding, the search was called off on Friday night and Saturday. The disappearance of the truck driver was treated as a missing persons case.

Though it isn’t clear exactly when the truck crashed, tire tracks on the roadway and a smashed guardrail gave investigators a few clues on how the truck crashed off of the bridge.

According to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office: “It was determined that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 20 at the Wapsipinicon River Bridge. For unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway, entered the median and collided with a guardrail before vaulting off the bridge embankment and into the Wapsipinicon River.

Driver’s Body Recovered In River Days After Crash

The body of 58 year old driver Michael Wallace was found Sunday morning in the Wapsipinicon River.

An autopsy will be conducted.

Authorities are still working to determine what caused Wallace to crash off of the bridge into the river.
