Yesterday a Memphis man was sentenced to 26 years in prison for shooting a FedEx Ground truck driver with an assault rifle during a 2014 road rage incident.
Motorist Keith Austin was convicted on charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. He was sentenced to 16 years on the attempted murder charge and 10 years on the charge of employing a firearm in a dangerous felony. The sentences will run consecutively.
The charges and conviction stem from a road rage incident that occurred just before 5 p.m. on December 18, 2014 in Memphis, Tennessee. FedEx truck driver Edwin Ray was driving east on Holmes Road when he said that a man in a van pulled up along side him and began gesturing and behaving aggressively. When Ray stopped at a stop sign, he reported hearing a loud bang and then realized that he had been shot.
Ray suffered critical gunshot wounds to both of his legs.
A witness saw the van driver shooting an AK-47 at the FedEx semi truck and took down the van driver’s license plate number. Police arrested Keith Austin a few weeks later.
