Connecticut State Police are warning protesters to stay off the highway after a demonstration over the weekend delayed a critically ill patient from getting to the hospital.
The protest took place on Saturday around 4:30 p.m. on the I-95 north Exit 47 ramp.
Police say between 100 and 200 protesters blocked the roadway as a show of protest against President Trump’s immigration policies.
Authorities eventually dispersed the protesters with pepper spray, but they were not able to clear the highway in time for an ambulance carrying a critically ill patient. Because they were unable to reach a hospital in time, medical personnel were forced to perform an emergency procedure in the ambulance.
Connecticut police located and arrested the leader of the protest, 66 year old Norman Clement. He was charged with inciting a riot, disorderly conduct, interfering with an officer and reckless use of the highway by a pedestrian.
CSP issued a statement following the incident: “The Connecticut State Police would like to remind the public that protests blocking any highway or roadway is not only a crime, but dangerous and will NOT be tolerated. All laws will be strictly enforced.”
