Truck Driver Perishes In Fiery Two Truck Crash On I-75

A truck driver lost his life when one semi rear ended another and then caught fire on Florida’s I-75 this morning.

The crash was reported around 5:30 a.m. in Sarasota County in I-75 at mile marker 184. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 27 year old truck driver Matthew Simon was traveling south on I-75. Trooper say Simon failed to slow down for a slower semi driven by 61 year old Fernando Irizarry Rivera in the lane in front of him. Simon’s semi crashed into Rivera’s trailer, causing it to leave the roadway.

Simon’s semi was soon engulfed in flames. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rivera suffered only minor injuries in the crash. No other injuries were reported.

One of the crashed trucks was hauling ice cream; the other was hauling beer.

FHP is still investigating the crash.

The crash closed down southbound I-75 for several hours, but all lanes are now open.

The FHP’s Gregory Bueno, who was on the scene, reminds drivers to “travel safely, two eyes on road, mind on driving.”
