The incident happened in the northbound lanes of I-81 near Exit 57.
Police say that 24 year old New York-based truck driver Zivko Laic stopped his truck along I-81. He had reportedly exited the truck and was standing close to the driver’s door when his rig was sideswiped by a semi driven by 56 year old Alan Kegal of Texas.
Police say that Kegal did not stop.
Laic died as a result of of the crash.
Authorities were able to locate Kegal at a Pilot Flying J truck stop in Dauphin County. His truck had front-end damage consistent with the hit and run crash.
Kegal was arrested and now faces serious charges, including reckless driving, driving outside of his lane, causing a crash that resulted in a death, and leaving the scene of a crash.
The crash shut down part of I-81 for about three hours, causing a traffic back up that was five miles long.
It isn’t clear why Laic stopped his truck.
The incident is still under investigation.
