A bi-plane pilot survived a terrifying ordeal during which he collided with a semi truck while trying an emergency landing on I-80 yesterday, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The incident happened in Evanston, Wyoming, just before 6 p.m.
From the Wyoming Highway Patrol:
“A single passenger bi-plane was flying from Longmont, Co to Sky Park, UT. For reasons unknown, the plane’s engine lost power. The pilot attempted to land the plane on Interstate 80. The plane struck the top of the sleeper berth on a tractor-trailer which was hauling pigs. The impact caused the pilot to lose control of the plane. The plane then struck a variable speed limit sign and crashed on the north side of I-80 near milepost 8. The pilot was not injured in the crash. The semi truck came to a controlled stop on the right shoulder of the highway.“
Police say that the truck driver wasn’t hurt during the incident.
Both the plane and the semi truck sustained significant damage.
The FAA and NTSB will both be joining the investigation into the incident.
