Driver-focused enforcement blitz is just two weeks away

Here’s a quick reminder that the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s “Operation Safe Driver Week” enforcement event is coming up in July.

This year Operation Safe Driver Week is slated for July 15 — 21. You can expect to see an increased number of law enforcement officers on patrol across the U.S. These officers will be on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviors by commercial vehicle drivers as well as passenger drivers.

Examples of the unsafe driving behaviors that officers will be on the lookout for include speeding, distracted driving, texting, failure to use a seatbelt while operating a CMV or in a passenger vehicle, following too closely, improper lane change, failure to obey traffic control devices.

Operation Safe Driver Week is conducted in partnership with the FMCSA.

During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, which took place from October 15 — 21, officers issued 59,193 warnings and citations. A total of 38,878 citations/warnings were issued to CMV drivers while 20,315 citations/warnings were issued to passenger vehicle drivers.

The top five offenses committee by CMV drivers during Operation Safe Driver Week in 2017 were:

  1. State/Local Moving Violations – 84.2 percent (of warnings/citations)
  2. Speeding – 7.4 percent
  3. Failure to Use Seat Belt – 2.6 percent
  4. Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device – 2.5 percent
  5. Using a Handheld Phone – 0.8 percent

Don’t forget that the CVSA’s Brake Safety Week blitz is scheduled for September 16 — 22. You can click here for more information on Brake Safety Week.
