Flooding forces closure of Schuylkill Expressway

Heavy flooding has forced Pennsylvania transportation officials to shut down part of the Schuylkill Expressway near King of Prussia today.

Schuylkill Expressway was closed down in both directions at Route 202 as of 11:30 a.m., according to the Phoenixville Patch. It isn’t clear when the roadway is expected to reopen.

The flooding also prompted the closure of the Pennsylvania Turnpike this morning, but it was reopened around noon.

Severe traffic backups have been reported as vehicles are diverted off of flooded roads which are also being flooded.

Heavy flooding has left numerous drivers stranded and prompted dozens of water rescues.

The Phoenixville Fire Department is asking drivers who see flood waters on the roadway to “please exercise extreme caution and turn around if possible.”

Over the weekend, intense storms drenched Pennsylvania, causing the flooding.

More rain is expected to hammer the area through Tuesday.
