Oversize load strikes bridge, shutting down road overnight

Ohio transportation officials had to shut down a major interstate for most of the day after a truck hauling construction equipment struck an overpass. The accident closed a portion of I-76 for most of the day, and the overpass road will remain closed through the night.

The crash happened on Monday, December 3 around 6:20 a.m. in Akron, Ohio, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Police say that a truck driver was hauling a bulldozer eastbound on I-76 when the too-tall load collided with the East Avenue bridge. The collision caused the bulldozer to fall off of the trailer onto the roadway.

A car then crashed into the fallen bulldozer.

No injuries were reported.

The incident shut down I-76 eastbound for most of the day while Ohio Department of Transportation crews inspected the East Avenue bridge for structural damage. The interstate was reopened in time for the evening rush hour.

The East Avenue bridge is expected to remain closed in both directions until tomorrow.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident including the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Akron Fire Department, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
