17 hurt in foggy 20 vehicle pileup in Cajon Pass

Published:

California authorities say that several people were injured in a serious multi vehicle pileup that happened in foggy conditions on I-15 in Cajon Pass.

The crashes began around 10:40 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-15 (15 Freeway) between Oak Hills and Highway 138. The number of vehicles involved remains unclear, but a California Highway Patrol spokesperson told KTVU that it could be as many as 20 vehicles. In images captured at the scene, you can see that several commercial vehicles were involved in the crash.

Ten people were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries. Seven others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The cause of the pileup crash is still under investigation, but authorities say that dense fog caused close to whiteout conditions.

All lanes of southbound I-15 reopened around 3:20 p.m., but serious traffic backups have been reported in the area.
