Massachusetts troopers issue numerous tickets to pickup driver hauling an excavator

Published:

Massachusetts State Police were not impressed when they caught a pickup truck driver attempting to haul an excavator earlier this week.

From a release from the Massachusetts State Police:

What could go wrong? … Yesterday morning, Trooper Christopher Kaszyk of the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section was on patrol on Route 58 in Carver when he observed a Dodge RAM 5500 truck carrying a medium-sized excavator estimated to weight about 10,500 lbs.

In addition to exceeding the truck’s acceptable gross vehicle weight rating by 4,450 lbs., the excavator was secured with just one 3-inch strap (with an estimated securing capacity of 3,000 lbs., or less than one-third of the weight of the excavator it was holding in place). The driver was fined for those violations as well as for the weight on the rear axle exceeding the tire ratings, having an expired inspection sticker, a missing wheel fastener, and having no warning flag on the projecting load.

Because of the public safety hazards posed by the truck, Trooper Kaszyk placed it out of service until the excavator could be off-loaded.
