Forecasters predict that a major winter storm will hit California this evening, dumping as much as seven feet of snow in some parts of the state.
A winter storm warning is in effect for northern California from 4 p.m. today through 10 p.m. on Saturday. Passes in Carson, Ebbetts, and Sonora are expected to get as much as seven feet of snow while Donner Summit could be hit with four to five feet. Three to four feet of snow are predicted in Lake Tahoe.
In addition to several feet of snow in many areas, forecasters warn that wind gusts could hit speeds of up to 65 m.p.h. The National Weather Service says that travel is highly discouraged.
The U.S. National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a warning that mountain driving will be “very difficult, if not impossible” starting this afternoon through Saturday.
The National Weather Service recommends that drivers alter their travel plans if at all possible: “Planning to drive in the foothills and mountains? Travel before 3 pm today or wait until the storm has passed Sunday. If you must go, prepare for chain controls, lengthy delays, possible road closures, and treacherous driving conditions! Worst travel time will likely be on Thursday, with blowing heavy snow and blizzard conditions possible.”
