One killed in 23 vehicle pileup on I-80 in Utah

Published:

Utah police say that one person is dead following a major pileup crash involving multiple tractor trailers near Echo Junction this morning.

The crash was reported around 7:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 172.

The crash involved approximately 23 passenger and commercial vehicles according to KSL. The Utah Highway Patrol reports that the majority of the vehicles involved were tractor trailers. There was one confirmed fatality as a result of the crash, but the identity of the person has not been released. At least 16 people were injured, according to the latest reports.

Crash victims were transported to a local church by school bus in order to keep warm, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but ice and snow made the roadway slick around the time of the crash.

Transportation officials shut down I-80 in both directions for cleanup and investigation of the crash. One lane of eastbound I-80 reopened around noon. All lanes of westbound I-80 are expected to remain shut down for hours. Drivers are asked to seek alternative routes.

Several other crashes have been reported in the area in the past 24 hours.
