The Rhode Island State Police have released their results from last week’s CVSA Roadcheck 2018 inspection blitz.
Roadcheck 2018 took place throughout North America on June 5 — 7 with an emphasis on Hours of Service regulation compliance.
During this year’s 72 hour inspection campaign, officers inspected more than 400 commercial vehicles and uncovered almost 800 violations, according to a news release from the Rhode Island State Police. Eighty-six trucks or drivers were placed out of service, putting the out of service rate over 21%.
Here are the major takeaways from Rhode Island’s contribution to Roadcheck 2018:
- Inspectors uncovered 565 vehicle violations.
- Inspectors also found 116 driver violations.
- 62 vehicles taken out of service for major defects, such as flat or underinflated tires; inoperable turn signals or brake lights; or air brakes out of adjustment.
- 24 drivers taken out of service for violations such as driving too many hours without taking the required number of hours of breaks; not maintaining proper log books and records; or not having a medical card, as required.
- Two drivers were arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended CDL license.
- One driver was issued a summons for possession of marijuana.
- Thirteen operators were cited for failure to stop for the mandatory roadside inspections.
- Four drivers were cited for seatbelt violations.
According to the Rhode Island State Police, “inspections took place at the weigh stations on Route 146 South in North Smithfield and on Interstate 95 North in Richmond. They were conducted by troopers from the Rhode Island State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit, as well as safety inspectors from the Rhode Island office of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the North Kingstown, Johnston, Smithfield, West Warwick and Providence Police Departments.”
During Roadcheck 2017, Rhode Island put up similar inspection numbers, inspecting 484 commercial vehicles and placing 66 vehicles and 27 drivers out of service.
