Shattered glass strewn across highway after semi hauling glass loses control

Published:

A semi truck spilled nearly 35,000 empty liquor bottles Friday morning, sending shards of glass all over the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 at North Carolina Highway, 42 closing it for hours.

Backed Up For Miles

Traffic was backed up all the way into Wake County.

The accident, which occurred west of Clayton between NC 42, which is exit 312, and NC 210, prompted authorities to close all eastbound lanes of the interstate while debris was cleared from the road.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the driver was cited for failure to maintain lane control. The driver’s condition, as well as his identity, have not been released.

The crash occurred during morning rush hour forcing drivers to find alternate routes, backing up traffic on many of the surrounding surface streets.

The driver was traveling to Florida from Kernersville, N.C., when the accident occurred, authorities said.
