Sideswipe leaves trucker in precarious position

Published:

A two-vehicle crash left a truck driver’s load dangling over the side of an I-80 bridge near Newton, Iowa this morning.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. in the icy westbound lanes of the interstate at mile marker 164.

Chief Deputy Duane Rozendaal told the Newton Daily News that “A brief shower of freezing rain created the roadway condition to become icy. A pickup truck pulling a small flatbed trailer lost control and tangled up with the semi which rolled the semi onto its side and over the railroad bridge.”

The truck, which was hauling 11,000 pound spools of wire, was left with its load dangling off of the overpass after the crash.

No injuries were reported.

The incident forced the partial closure of a stretch of westbound I-80, resulting in significant traffic backups.
