Truck driver helps rescue kids from burning house

A Nebraska truck driver is being called a hero after helping a mother rescue children trapped in a burning home.

The incident happened in Sioux City, Iowa, just before 11:00 p.m. on October 18.

Truck driver Martin Hughes was traveling on Riverside Blvd. when he was flagged down by a woman with two children, according to the Siouxland News. When Hughes pulled over, the woman begged him to help her other two children, who were stuck inside the family’s burning home.

Hughes said that he initially tried to crawl into the home under the smoke to rescue the children, but the smoke was too heavy for him.

Hughes and the woman then went around to all of the windows of the house until they located the children, then broke out the windows and pulled the children to safety.

Hughes suffered minor injuries from broken glass. No one else was hurt.

“Totally just the right place at the right time,” Hughes said.
