Trucker buys lotto scratcher on a whim, wins $750K

Published:

A California trucker got the surprise of his life when he bought a scratcher ticket at a truck stop on a whim and found himself hundreds of thousands of dollars richer within minutes.

Fresno County-based trucker Cruz Rivas Castro was hauling a load of fish along the I-5 Grapevine when he and his co-driver stopped at the Pilot Travel Center on 31642 Castiac Road to fuel up, according to a press release from the California Lottery. While in the truck stop, Castro spotted a lottery vending machine and purchased two Mystery Crossword Scratchers.

Castro hopped back into his truck to scratch the tickets. Castro was stunned to see that the second ticket was a winner of the game’s top prize of $750,000. “Oh my God, I have big money!” Castro declared after his unexpected lottery win.

In spite of his big win, Castro made sure that he delivered his load on time before stopping at another lotto retailer in Madera to scan his ticket to confirm his big win.

When asked what he might do with his winnings, Castro said, “I’m dreaming now of buying a house and a car. I still can’t believe it!”
