The Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers about a major interstate closure happening this weekend.
Starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, July 27 through 5 a.m. on July 29, all lanes of westbound I-10 between 51st and 67th avenues will be closed for construction.
Transportation officials recommend the following detour: “During the closure, westbound I-10 traffic can exit the freeway at 51st Avenue, detour either north to McDowell Road or south to Van Buren Street and return to westbound I-10 at 67th Avenue. The newly built westbound I-10 access road between 51st and 67th avenues will also remain open during construction.”
The closure will allow crews to use large cranes to move concrete support beams over I-10 using cranes. The concrete beams will eventually be used in the construction of flyover bridges connecting I-10 with the South Mountain Freeway, which is set to open in 2019.
The Arizona Department of Transportation says that the interstate closure will result in heavy traffic and delays and asks drivers to plan ahead and seek alternate routes.
