High winds toppled three semi trucks on a stretch of I-93 through Franconia Notch yesterday afternoon, causing a close call for a New Hampshire State trooper who responded to the scene.
New Hampshire State Police were called to the scene around 2:30 yesterday after receiving a report about two semi trucks that blew over on Franconia Notch. When troopers arrived on scene, they found that both a northbound truck and a southbound truck had both been blown off the roadway into the guardrail, according to WMUR.
While troopers were responding to these crashes, a northbound semi truck also fell prey to the dangerous high winds and tipped over onto a New Hampshire trooper’s cruiser that was parked in the breakdown lane.
From a New Hampshire Department of Transportation release:
“State Police Capt. Chris Vetter told the Union Leader “the trooper was in the breakdown lane when the truck blew over and the trailer came to rest on the side of the cruiser. Neither the trooper nor the truck driver was injured, Vetter said. The cruiser was damaged. “My understanding is there were no injuries at all.”
Both directions of I-93 were shut down for the removal of the blown over trucks for over two hours. After all lanes reopened, transportation officials opted to divert truck traffic away from the Franconia Notch because of continued high winds.
