Over 24,000 trucks recalled for exhaust pipe defect that could cause crash

Tens of thousands of semi trucks have been recalled for an exhaust pipe problem that could result in a traffic accident.

The recall was issued by Navistar for an exhaust pipe issue that affects International 24,173 trucks.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, “the rear exhaust hanger bracket may crack resulting in an increase in strain on the forward hanger bracket to crack and in some cases may result in the partial or full separation of the exhaust tail pipe from the vehicle. If the exhaust tail pipe separates from the vehicle while in operation, a loose part in the roadway could be struck by another vehicle which increases the risk of a vehicle crash.”

The recalled models are all 73 sleeper cab trucks of the following models:

Recall documents warn drivers that they might notice a cracked rear exhaust pipe hanger or an out of place tail pipe when they conduct a pre-trip inspection.

Navistar will notify dealers and drivers about the recall with letters mailed out on April 23, 2019. Dealers will perform the necessary repairs free of charge.
