Big rig plows through bridge railing, killing driver in fatal plunge

A truck driver was killed after his semi truck plunged off the side of a bridge in Louisiana Monday.

The accident happened on October 21st at around 7:30 a.m. in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. 

According to Louisiana State Police, 50-year-old Mississippi truck driver, John Cloninger, was traveling west along Interstate 10 when he suddenly veered off the roadway and crashed into the I 10 Basin Bridge railing before plunging over the side and onto the ground below. Cloninger was found dead at the scene. 

Officers who responded to the crash reported that “Cloninger was unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained fatal injuries.” 

According to WAFB 9 News, An initial police statement suggested that officials believe Cloninger may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the crash, but investigators are still looking into the cause of the incident and the possibility of drowsy driving was not mentioned in the official police report.

A toxicology sample taken from Cloninger at the scene is still being analyzed, reported WBRZ 2.
