A Virginia lawmaker recently introduced a bill that would require truck drivers to install and use a commercial GPS device.

House Bill 170 was introduced by State Delegate Terry Austin on December 26.

The bill is reportedly a response to an increase in traffic trouble caused by stuck trucks and bridge strikes.

The bill would require commercial vehicles to be equipped with a “global positioning system (GPS) specifically designed for large commercial vehicles that assists such vehicle to (a) avoid low overpasses, (b) avoid prohibited roads, and (c) identify highways suitable for such vehicle.”

The bill would require the GPS device to be in use at all times except when the truck is on an interstate.

House Bill 170 is currently awaiting referral to a committee.
