Blitz Alert: Troopers placed every 20 miles of 2,555 mile interstate

Published:

Multiple state police agencies are teaming up for a major enforcement effort during the holiday weekend.

Troopers in eight states will be participating in an enforcement campaign along I-40 starting this week for the annual “I-40 Challenge”. The participating states are North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

The enforcement effort will be focused on the two biggest Thanksgiving travel times — Wednesday, November 27, 2019 from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m.

Troopers will be placed every 20 miles along the 2,555 mile long I-40 corridor on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviors like distracted driving, seatbelt violations, impaired drivers, and speeding.

In addition to the I-40 Challenge Enforcement Effort, the California Highway Patrol will be conducting an additional enforcement effort called Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) statewide starting at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27 through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 1.

“Accepting the challenge and working with our law enforcement partners and the public has proven very successful in years past,” California Highway Patrol (CHP) Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “California did not experience a single fatality on I-40 during past challenges. With the public’s cooperation, the CHP will continue to promote a safe traveling season during the Thanksgiving holiday.”
