Authorities in Washington state say that five people were injured yesterday when a dump truck driver lost control and collided with a pedestrian and multiple vehicles before crashing into a Subway restaurant.
The incident was reported around 9:40 a.m. on Monday, August 19, in Seattle.
Authorities say that a Barrett Services dump truck traveling downhill on James Street collided with a pedestrian, hit three vehicles, and then crashed into a Subway restaurant at speeds of around 40 m.p.h.
Five people were taken to the hospital, some with serious injuries. All are expected to survive.
One woman was trapped in her van after it was hit by the dump truck and require extraction by firefighters.
Authorities have said that the incident was caused by the dump truck’s “catastrophic mechanical failure.”
Neighbor Bruce Burns, 58, told the Seattle Times that he smelled burning brakes on the scene after the crash.
Witness Jon Jennings, 23, said, “I looked down the way and all you see [is] the dump truck barreling through. You could see the smoke rolling off the tires like (the driver) had her brakes locked up … You heard the glass break and everything, so we all came down here.”
The incident remains under investigation.
