A popular independent Nebraska truck stop has closed down permanently after decades of serving the trucking community.
Earlier this month, Don and Randy’s Truck Station located off I-80 in northwestern Lincoln, Nebraska, shut its doors for the last time after serving truckers since 1969.
According to the Lincoln Journal Star, the truck stop closed because founder Don Shoemaker passed away in April at the age of 87 and the operation became too much for son Randy, who plans to retire.
The neighboring Cobbler Inn Motel, also operated by the Shoemakers, has also closed permanently.
The 23.5 acre property is currently for sale for $3.4 million.
The truck stop was founded in 1969 by brothers Don, Harley, and Roger Shoemaker after they purchased a Skelly Oil Co. truck stop and renamed it. A family argument in 2008 led Harley to build a separate Shoemaker’s Truck Station near the original location.
