Georgia town opening roundabout with railroad tracks going through it

Published:

A Georgia town is opening an unusual roundabout bisected by a set of railroad tracks.

The roundabout is set to open at one of the busiest intersections in Sandersville, Georgia, at Highway 242 and Hospital Road.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the roundabout was put in place after numerous drivers made unsafe turns at the more standard intersection.

Kyle Collins with GDOT told 13WMAS that there shouldn’t be any problem with the unusual roundabout/railroad combination: “There’s really no need for concern on the railroad end. Right now, there’s no guard arms, but those will be reinstalled, so you would have to stop, just like you always would when a train is coming through.”

This is the first and only roundabout/railroad track combination in the state of Georgia.
