Illinois troopers going undercover to catch left-lane drivers

Illinois State Police promise that they'll be increasing patrols and aggressively enforcing left lane laws.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) say that they’ll be trying out a new tactic in 2019, using “covert vehicles” to help them catch drivers who are violating state left lane laws.

Trooper Tracy Lillard told WCIA, “One of the tactics were going to use this year is to use covert vehicles and that way we can do special details. The motoring public doesn’t know which vehicles we’re in so we can radio in to the squad cars up ahead to pull over those particular vehicles.”

ISP says the covert vehicles will be used to catch both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers who travel in the left lane of the interstate while they aren’t either passing or moving over for an emergency vehicle, which is a violation of the law.

While it isn’t quite clear what ISP means by “covert vehicles”, they’ve participated in numerous “Trooper in a Truck” details during which troopers ride along in semi trucks to try to catch unsuspecting drivers behaving badly.

ISP also says that they plan to aggressively enforce “Fatal Four” violations in the new year. These violations include driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
