Mexican restaurant leveled by out-of-control semi truck

Police say that the restaurant is "obviously closed."

Utah police are investigating after a semi truck left the roadway and crashed into a restaurant, causing the building to collapse.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, in Wellington, Utah when a semi truck crashed into the Los Jilbertos Mexican Fast Food restaurant located off of SR-6, according to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Authorities say that “an eastbound tractor trailer was traveling too fast for existing conditions. The truck left the roadway where it collided with a restaurant. The restaurant was open for business and occupied by the owners.”

The crash caused massive structural damage and knocked over the entire restaurant.

A woman was trapped inside the building and had to be extracted but wasn’t seriously injured.

The Utah Department of Public Safety confirms that three people were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

One lane of SR-6 is closed for the crash and police are warning drivers to avoid the area.

The incident resulted in a power outage that shut down nearby Wellington Elementary School for the day.

The Wellington Police Department notes in a Facebook post that “the business involved is obviously closed.”

The incident is still under investigation.
