More than 50 vehicles pile up in Iowa

Authorities in Iowa say that dozens of vehicles were involved in a pileup crash on Monday morning.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash was reported around 11 a.m. on December 9 on westbound I-80 at mile marker 139 near Altoona.

Troopers say that at least 50 vehicles collided during winter weather conditions. In images captured at the scene, you can see that several of the vehicles are semi trucks.

Update.. 1 person has been killed from a 30 car pile up near Altoona. Snow showers are moving east into eastern Iowa this afternoon impacting the area between noon and 3 pm to bring moderate snow showers and may cause some issues. This video you are watching was recorded west of Altoona this morning that caused a 30 car pile-up. If you plan on traveling this afternoon please use caution. Video was from KCCI of Des Moines.

Initial reports indicated that one person was killed, but police now say that the person was seriously injured. It isn’t yet clear how many others could be hurt.

Westbound I-80 is expected to remain closed for several more hours.
