A winding Vermont road famous for entrapping big trucks managed to snarl two of them on back to back days during the first week that the road was open to traffic for the year.
The first truck became stuck on Tuesday, May 21, on Route 108 between Cambridge and Stowe, Vermont, more commonly known as Smugglers’ Notch.
Local news station My Champlain Valley reports that 59 year old Canadian truck driver Jeremie Berry got stuck on Smugglers’ Notch late Tuesday morning. The incident closed the road down in both directions for about an hour before Berry was able to free himself by getting his truck turned back around.
Police issued Berry a fine of $1,197 for getting stuck on Smugglers’ Notch.
Less than 24 hours later, another stuck truck was spotted on Smugglers’s Notch
The identity of the second stuck trucker has not been released and it isn’t yet clear whether any fine will be issued.
Smugglers’ Notch officially opened to traffic on May 15, less than a week before the first truck became stuck.
Stuck trucks in Smugglers’ Notch have become such a problem in recent years in spite of multiple signs warning truckers away that Vermont lawmakers increased the fine in 2016 from $162 to up as much as $2000.
