Police: Pickup driver cut off semi, causing load of steel to penetrate cab

A semi truck driver lost his life in Michigan today when a pickup truck driver cut him off, causing his load to shift and slam into the cab of his vehicle.

The incident was reported just after 6:30 a.m. on Monday, January 14 near Monroe Township, Michigan.

According to a news release from Michigan State Police, the semi truck and the pickup truck were both eastbound on S Custer Road (also known as M-50) with the semi in the right lane and the pickup in the left lane. As another passenger vehicle in front of the pickup stopped for a red light, the pickup truck driver “changed lanes abruptly into the right lane which positioned it in front of the semi-truck.”

The semi truck hit the back of the pickup truck, causing the semi truck’s load of steel to crash through the cab of the truck and to hit the truck driver.

The fifty-four year old semi truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Michigan State Police at 734-242-3500.
