State police say ‘up to 40 vehicles’ involved in snowy pileup

Driving conditions quickly deteriorated after a snow squall led to a sudden surge of snow and wind.

Pennsylvania authorities say that dozens of passenger and commercial vehicles were involved in a major pileup this afternoon.

The crash was reported on southbound Route 222 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30, according to the Reading Eagle.

Authorities say that up to 40 vehicles were involving in the collision during whiteout conditions caused by a snow squall.

The exact number people injured has not yet been reported, but the incident has been declared a Level 2 Mass Casualty Incident, meaning that up to 25 people have been hurt. Vehicle entrapments have also been reported.

All lanes of southbound Route 222 are blocked by the crash. It isn’t clear when the roadway will reopen.
