A semi truck driver is facing numerous serious charges after leading police on an hours-long slow speed chase through rural Virginia that ended in a standoff with SWAT team members.
The incident began around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, in Spotsylvania, Virginia, according to a report from NBC Washington when a local called the police after spotting a semi truck parked on the roadway
When officers approached the parked truck, they noticed that 51 year old New York-based truck driver Muni Hussein appeared to be startled and he drove off without speaking to police, ignoring the activated lights and sirens.
Hussein then led officers on a slow pursuit and did not stop even after spike strips deflated several of his tires.
Hussein eventually ended the pursuit when his truck was unable to maneuver through a sharp turn on Piney Branch Road.
Police say that after the truck stopped, Hussein barricaded himself inside the sleeper berth of his truck, closed the curtain, and refused to communicate with police.
Officers tried for hours to communicate with Hussein, with no response. They even tried smoke bombs and flash-bang grenades to try to coax him out of the truck without any success. Finally, around 12:30 a.m., two SWAT team members entered the truck and took Hussein into custody.
Police discovered methamphetamine inside the truck.
Hussein is facing numerous serious charges including possession of illegal drugs, felony eluding, and driving under the influence in addition to several traffic violations. He is currently being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
