Trucker shot to death by motorist during roadside spat, no arrest made

South Carolina police say that they haven’t made any arrests following the fatal shooting of a logging truck driver earlier this week.

The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. on Monday, September 2, in Florence County, South Carolina.

Deputies: Person shot on East Palmetto Street at Old Marion Highway in Florence has died. Deputies are blocking one lane of the East Palmetto Street.

According to a news release from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, the altercation occurred at the intersection of Highway 76 and Old Marion Highway when 56 year old truck driver Charles Everett Williams, Jr got out of his vehicle to confront a passenger vehicle driver.

Police say that Williams threatened the motorist with a weapon and that the motorist responded to the threat by shooting Williams.

Williams later died from the gunshot wound.

It isn’t clear what sparked the confrontation between Williams and the motorist.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office says that “there is no one in custody at this time, but the incident remains under investigation.”
