Trucker survives crashing through semi trailer lying across highway

Published:

A truck driver says that he’s lucky to be alive after a two truck crash that sent him careening through another trucker’s trailer in Iowa this morning.

The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, near Pella, Iowa, according to WHOTV.

The incident began when a semi truck hauling double trailers on Highway 163 lost control and crashed, coming to a stop with the trailers lying on their sides across the lanes of the highway.

Shortly thereafter, grain truck driver Kevin Moorman was hauling a load eastbound on Highway 163 when he saw the dark underside of the tipped over trailers too late and plowed right through them.

Moorman says that he hit his brakes but he wasn’t able to stop in time. Luckily, he walked away from the crash without any injuries, though both trucks sustained heavy damage.

Iowa State Patrol announced around 11:20 a.m. that Highway 163 had been reopened.

The truck driver hauling doubles was taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

Moorman believes that the truck may have been traveling in the westbound lanes of Highway 163 before it crashed and slid into the eastbound lanes. “One trailer was laying in the median and the other was laying across the highway and her truck was on the highway,” he explained.

Eastbound Highway 163 was closed for hours for cleanup of the crash, resulting in traffic delays.

The crash remains under investigation by police.

You can hear Moorman talk about his terrifying experience in the report below.
