Trucker survives after loose steel coil rolls over, flattens cab

Published:

A semi truck driver walked away without serious injury after the steel coil that he was hauling came loose and flattened the cab of his truck.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. on Thursday, February 21, in Liberty Township, Ohio,  according to a report from WFMJ.

Ohio State Troopers say that 51 year old Ohio-based truck driver Bryan Shaffer was hauling a steel coil weighing 43,500 pounds westbound on I-80 when the crash occurred.

According to police, a van towing a trailer that was driving in front of Shaffer’s truck slowed down for traffic. Shaffer wasn’t able to stop in time, so he swerved into the median to avoid crashing into the trailer.

The steel coil then came loose from the trailer, rolled over the cab of the truck, and crashed into the van’s trailer.

Incredibly, Shaffer was able to walk away from his flattened truck without major injuries. No one else was hurt.

Ohio troopers cited Shaffer for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.
