Unsafe lane change sends semi into ravine

Nine mile traffic backups were reported in the area.

I-95 Hanover Crash

A semi truck driver suffered serious injuries early this morning when another driver’s unsafe lane change caused a crash that sent him rolling down into a ravine.

The crash was reported just before 4 a.m. on Friday, May 24, on southbound I-95 at mile marker 99 near Kings Dominion in Hanover County, Virginia, according to WTVR.

Virginia State Police describe the crash:

“A 2017 Kia Sportage was traveling southbound in the center lane of travel when the driver veered to the right to avoid another vehicle changing lanes. The Kia then struck a tractor trailer traveling in the right lane of travel. The tractor trailer then lost control, veered to the right, over corrected to the left, going down a ravine in the median. The tractor trailer was hauling approximately 32,000 pounds of trash, which was lost.”

The truck driver suffered serious injuries in the crash but is expected to survive.

No other injuries were reported.

The vehicle driver who made the unsafe lane change did not stop after the crash.

Nine mile traffic backups were reported at one point, but all lanes reopened just before 10 a.m.
