Woman killed by flying semi truck tires at Mississippi rest stop

A college student lost her life during a bizarre accident at a rest stop in Mississippi on Tuesday.

The incident happened at the eastbound I-10 rest stop in Gautier, Mississippi, on March 5, according to a report from WLOX.

Authorities say that 21 year old Tulane University student Margaret Maurer was traveling east on I-10 with two friends when they pulled into the rest stop for a bathroom break.

At the same time, a semi truck was traveling west on I-10 when the truck lost two tires.

These tires crossed over the eastbound lanes of I-10 and into the rest stop, striking Maurer as she stood in the parking lot, as well as two other vehicles.

Maurer died as a result of her injuries.

The truck driver later told police that he realized that he lost the tires but didn’t know that anyone had been hit by them. He said that he turned around and headed back east. After seeing first responders at the rest stop, he pulled over and cooperated with investigators.

The incident is still under investigation.
